The SarcoidosisUK and Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospitals Cardiac Sarcoidosis Patient Day

Our free virtual Cardiac Sarcoidosis day designed for patients!

On the 17th November 2021 we hosted the first ever SarcoidosisUK and Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospitals Cardiac Sarcoidosis Patient Day. This was a free virtual event created specifically for cardiac sarcoidosis patients, where we heard patient-centred talks from a line-up of leading specialists.

The Cardiac Sarcoidosis Patient Day Speakers

Dr Vasilis Kouranos

Dr Vasilis Kouranos is a consultant respiratory physician at the Royal Brompton Hospital. He has great experience in management of patients with sarcoidosis, interstitial lung disease and pulmonary fibrosis. 

Dr Rakesh Sharma

Dr Rakesh Sharma is a consultant cardiologist at Royal Brompton Hospital and Cardiology Lead for Cardiac Sarcoidosis.

He qualified in 1995 with triple honours from Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital Medical School (now part of King’s College London) and was Proxime Accesit to the University of London Gold Medal. He underwent postgraduate training at tertiary centres in London.

Dr Sharma was awarded a British Heart Foundation fellowship to study his PhD in cardiology at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London. For his research, he won the Young Investigator Prize at the American Heart Association.

Professor Athol Wells

Professor Athol Wells is a consultant in respiratory medicine at Royal Brompton Hospital and highly regarded as the lead professor for sarcoidosis the UK. He is also the principal editor or co-editor of three books including Sarcoidosis (CRC Press, 2012).

Dr John Baksi

Dr Baksi is an integral member of the inherited cardiac conditions and CMR services. In this role, he consults with patients who have heart muscle disease as well as family members who may be predisposed to a familial cardiac condition. This is complemented by his expertise in CMR imaging, reporting across a comprehensive range of cardiovascular conditions. His specialist areas of interest include heart muscle diseases such as dilated and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, cardiovascular MRI and cardiac genetics.

Dr Kshama Wechalekar

Dr Kshama Wechalekar is the lead consultant in nuclear medicine and PET at Royal Brompton Hospital and the Wimpole Street site. Her areas of expertise include; nuclear perfusion imaging of the heart for ischaemic heart disease with SPECT and PET (Rubidium), quantification of lung function with VQ SPECT-CT, imaging infection using PET-CT, imaging for cardiac and systemic sarcoidosis using PET-CT and neuro-cardiac imaging with mIBG. She has been President of the British Nuclear Cardiology Society from 2016 to 2018 and hosted the first multi-specialty cardiac imaging meeting in 2018.

Dr Raheel Ahmed

Dr Raheel Ahmed is a graduate of Newcastle University and currently work as a ST4 cardiology and GIM registrar in the Northern Deanery of England. He is currently partaking in an out of programme funded MD at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London. He is a member of the MRCP PACES scenario writing group, the British Cardiovascular Society (BCS) 100 voices project and a member of the committee that organises, leads and manages the regional GIM Registrar teaching in the Northern Deanery.

Dr Raj Khattar

Dr Rajdeep Khattar qualified at the University of Southampton Medical School, before his specialist training in cardiology in North West London. Dr Khattar has more than 10 years’ experience as a consultant cardiologist and has extensive experience in clinical cardiology, particularly the use of advanced echocardiography techniques to diagnose and manage patients with suspected cardiac conditions.
